Hopefully you haven’t had to call a Raleigh HVAC contractor during the first few cold snaps we’ve had this year. Usually, the first time the temperatures start to dip is when residents notice something’s wrong and have to call in for heater repair.

If you haven’t taken proactive steps to ensure your heater is working efficiently this winter, it’s not too late to get started.

Preventative Maintenance

The first thing you can do is schedule preventative maintenance if you haven’t had any service since last spring. We usually recommend preventative maintenance twice a year – once in the spring and once in the summer – in order to make sure your A/C and heater are running optimally for the peak seasons of summer and winter. If you’ve skipped a maintenance check, it’s not too late to schedule one now and ensure that your heating system is prepared for when the harshest dips in temperatures arrive.

One of the best benefits of having regular maintenance performed — in the long run it can save you money. HVAC checkups lead to fewer breakdowns and costly repairs. Also, the more often you have your system checked, the longer you can extend the lifespan of your heater and A/C.

Homeowner Tips

There’s a few other things you can do as a homeowner to make sure your heater is running efficiently. An efficient HVAC system means a cheaper heating bill!

Clean the air filter – We always check the state of air filters when we are servicing a house; however, this is something a homeowner can easily maintain on his or her own. If the air filter isn’t changed every one to three months, the system is not going to be running efficiently as there’s likely quite a bit of buildup from dust and dirt particles and obstructing air flow.

Insulate windows & doors – Your system is going to work a lot harder than it needs to if the warm air is constantly leaking out from cracks in the windows and doors. Do you feel cold drafts in certain parts of your home? Then you probably have warm air leaking out. Keeping the warm air inside of the house means your heater doesn’t have to run as much, and this can save you money over the course of the winter.
