After your new HVAC system is installed, you may notice that the yellow EnergyGuide sticker on the outdoor unit shows a SEER2 rating that is lower than the efficiency rating listed on your proposal.
This does not mean the wrong system was installed.
Why the EnergyGuide Sticker May Show a Lower Rating
The yellow EnergyGuide sticker on the outdoor unit may show a lower SEER2 rating than the certified efficiency of your complete installed system.
That’s because the efficiency of a split HVAC system depends on the specific combination of outdoor and indoor equipment—not the outdoor unit alone.
Your complete system may include:
- The outdoor condenser or heat pump
- The indoor evaporator coil
- The furnace or air handler
So why does the EnergyGuide sticker show a lower number in the first place? For split-system air conditioners, the EnergyGuide label reflects the efficiency of the least-efficient approved indoor/outdoor equipment combination for that outdoor unit. In other words, it is essentially a “worst-case” efficiency rating—not necessarily the rating of the specific matched system installed in your home. Depending on the indoor coil, furnace, or air handler paired with the outdoor unit, the complete system can achieve a higher certified SEER2 rating.
The same outdoor unit can be paired with different approved indoor components, and those combinations can have different certified SEER2 ratings.
That means the number shown on the yellow sticker does not necessarily represent the certified efficiency of the exact equipment combination installed in your home.
Your AHRI Rating Verifies Your Complete System
The certified efficiency of your system is based on the exact matched combination of outdoor and indoor equipment.
That combination is certified through AHRI, the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute.
For split systems, AHRI certifies the performance of the matched system rather than the individual outdoor or indoor unit by itself. Each certified equipment combination is assigned an AHRI Certified Reference Number that can be used to verify its efficiency rating.
In most cases, your AHRI certification number is included directly on your Klimatology HVAC proposal, so you can verify the certified rating of the system you purchased even if the yellow EnergyGuide sticker shows a lower number.

Your System Was Matched to the Efficiency Rating You Purchased
At Klimatology HVAC, we select matched equipment combinations based on the efficiency rating included in your proposal.
If your proposal specifies a particular SEER2 rating, the equipment combination installed is selected and verified to meet that certified rating.
So if the EnergyGuide sticker on your outdoor unit shows a lower number, it does not mean the wrong system was installed. The sticker simply may show a different rating than the certified efficiency of your specific matched system.
